Everyone has ever seen someone save another person from choking by compression of the abdomen. This is the famous method of Heimlich, which makes the savior a hero capable of freeing the airways of what obstructs them.
But if it is you who chokes you and you are alone, what should you do? Fortunately, there are other methods you can apply to yourself.
The technique you are about to learn can save your life in case of choking. Of course, it’s useless to do it if other people around you who know Heimlich’s method.
To do this technique (which is originally a boxing movement meant to harden the abs), you have to rest your knees and hands on the floor. Throw your hands in the air and drop sharply on your stomach.
This should be enough to force an exhale to dislodge anything stuck in your throat.
A few tips
Note that this method will not work if you are pregnant or overweight.
We must absolutely let go. Throwing yourself on the ground and risking injury to your forehead can be frightening and discouraging, but it’s always better than dying suffocated. In case of severe choking, your survival instinct should take over and allow you to properly perform this movement.
If that does not work, you can still hit your back. You must try everything to free your airways. And try to be careful what you ingest next time!
